Linear Equations

What is a Linear Equation?

Polynomials are a major building block in the foundation of our mathematical understanding. A polynomial is an algebraic expression that has many (“poly”) terms, but the number of terms must be finite – in other words, you can have a LOT of terms, but you have to be able to count how many terms there are.

These terms can have variables with whole number exponents (no negatives, fractions, or decimal exponents) or they can be constants. The terms are separated by plus or minus signs.

Polynomial Example vs. Non-example

We can perform all kinds of operations on polynomials (addition, subtraction, multiplication, but not always division). When studied as polynomial functions, they have a lot of interesting and noteworthy characteristics. Polynomials also allow us to explore other mathematical and scientific topics, so having a good understanding is essential.
